 The German Peasants War was a widespread popular revolt in the German-speaking areas of Central Europe from 1524 to 1525. It failed because of the intense opposition of the aristocracy, who slaughtered up to 100,000 of the 300,000 poorly armed peasants and farmers. it was form of politics because it was Europe's largest and most widespread popular uprising prior to the French Revolution of 1789. Engels' analysis was picked up in the middle 20th century by the French Annales School, and Marxist historians in East Germany and Britain. Using Karl Marx's concept ofhistorical materialism, Engels portrayed the events of 1524–1525 as prefiguring the 1848 Revolution.
